Philips LaserFax LPF5125 Toner Cartridges Printer Review
Expert review of the Philips LaserFax LPF5125 printer 14 October 2011
Philips has a long tradition of dabbling in dozens of unique markets. From energy saving light bulbs to life-saving healthcare equipment, they make all of their products with the motto 'sense and simplicity' in mind. The LaserFax LPF5125 is a multi-purpose fax machine, scanner, and printer that attempts to do a little bit of everything. While there are similar machines on the market that are roughly the same price and quality, there are a few unique qualities which Philips has brought over from their other products.
This 10 kg printer looks as if a fax machine and home printer were fused together. The phone, pin pad, and computer controls are all located on top of the LPF5125 while the smaller 100 sheet output tray sticks out of the face of the printer. The 250 sheet input bin and Philips LPF5125 toner saddles can be accessed through two small hatches on the front, directly next to the scanner output. A flash memory and small processor can save 200 pages of faxes and scans even when the ink or paper has run out.
The unique Eco features are the saving grace of the LaserFax LPF5125 and this is no doubt a major trend in all of Philip's products. The paper save function can put multiple pages of faxes, scans, and prints on a single page of paper to reduce excess usage of paper. The toner save mode reduces the Philips LPF5125 cartridge usage by as much as 40% while the power save mode can save on energy costs by putting the printer in hibernation. The fax has a decent amount of features which enable hundreds of saved contacts as well as group broadcasting to nearly two dozen parties.
For such a small and reasonably priced machine, the LPF5125 performs just under what a small office may like to see. The mono laser prints come out at 200 dpi, well below the 600 dpi that comes standard anymore. The prints are produced at a sluggish at 6-10 pages per minute depending on if they are coming from the scanner, faxer, or printer. The LPF5125 was built for a small office needing an entry-level fax machine more than a laser printer.
